Coast Flax-lily

Scientific Name: Dianella brevicaulis

Description: This soft green tussock hides dozens of tiny electric blue flowers with bright yellow stamens and black anthers. The fleshy royal blue fruits, which follow in January, are eaten by a number of our native birds.

Coast Flax-lily is the floral emblem of Friends of the Bluff. It is a soft green tussock that prefers sandy soils. Flowering stems are hidden amongst the foliage rather than extending above it as in the Dianella revoluta.

The leaves are a traditional resource for the Wadawurrung used to make ties.
