Upper Littoral on Ocean Side

upper littoral

Barnacles and mussels cling strongly to the rocks, withstanding pounding waves, rushing tides and long exposure to the sun. Small Blue Periwinkles and blue-green algae nestle in holes and crevices. Whilst not seeming to do much, the conical shelled limpets are mobile molluscs actively grazing and defying pounding waves, rushing tides or long exposure to the sun.

Elsewhere White Herons prowl the shelf while cormorants look exactly like a shag on a rock.
