Some common questions:
Am I too old?
Volunteers need to be at least 18 years old but we have no expiry date!
One of the great things about our volunteers is their diversity of ages, experience and knowledge.
Do I need to know how to snorkel/canoe/skipper a boat?
No! We try and give volunteers an opportunity to get in and on the water but it is definitely not a prerequisite. You don’t need to get wet if you don’t want to!
Do I need a degree in marine biology?
All we need from you is a passion for the environment, a love of sharing your enthusiasm with our visitors and some of your time. Learning about aquatic environments is all on the job! Our volunteers have a wealth of life experiences. We have volunteers mechanics, doctors, teachers and grandparents to name a few!
Do I need to be very fit?
Minimum level of fitness required. Many activities are conducted indoors at the centre.
Do I need to give up time once per week?
Our peak times when we need volunteers are during the school holidays. Some volunteers help out once per week, some help out once per year and everything in between
Still have questions?

“I knew nothing about marine life but the basics….I became a volunteer to learn more about our fabulous and unique environment….. I keep learning every day when immersed in all things marine at the centre” Jenny MFDC volunteer since 2010
