Grey Mangrove

Scientific Name: Avicennia marina subsp. australasica

Description: The only mangrove species to grow in Victoria, the Grey Mangrove grows along the Barwon estuary and forms an important habitat along the edge of the river.

Mangroves are well suited to living in thick airless mud and have specialised breathing roots called pneumatophores to allow them to get air to the roots. Salt glands on the back of the leaves get rid of excess salt whist large seeds that float and stick in the mud provide a way for these plants to disperse.

Mangroves are very sensitive to trampling so please keep to tracks and boardwalks.
