Southern Right Whale
Scientific Name: Eubalaena australis
Description: Southern Right Whales migrate from sub-Antarctic waters to Victoria during winter in order to give birth to their young. Feeding on microscopic plankton, these large whales have many plates of baleen in their mouth, used to help strain their food from the water.
This species of whale was nearly wiped out by whalers in the 19th century but now are regularly seen along our coastline each winter. The Bluff at Barwon Heads and other headlands along the Victorian coast are good places to try and see whales during winter.
