Humpback Whale

Scientific Name: Megaptera novaeangliae

Description: The Humpback Whale is a species of baleen whale that feeds on krill, squid and small fish and grows to 14–17 m in length. Found in oceans and seas around the world, Humpback Whales migrate up to 16,000km each year from their feeding grounds near Antarctica to tropical or subtropical waters where they breed and give birth.

The Humpback Whale was heavily targeted by the whaling industry but eastern Australian populations are now recovering well and animals are regularly spotted from headlands in Victoria like the Bluff while they are migrating north or south.
