Sulphur-crested Cockatoo
Scientific Name: Cacatua galerita
Description:
The Sulphur-crested Cockatoo is a large bird with a white body and distinctive yellow crest on the top. The bill and legs are dark grey to black. It spends most of its time in large flocks, whether foraging on the ground or roosting in trees.
The Sulphur-crested Cockatoo is an iconic species which has increased in numbers in recent decades. It has adapted to feed in farmland or in urban areas where the loud screeching call can often be heard as the flocks waken near dawn. Its rowdy habits and liking for chewing on wooden window frames have made it unpopular with some coastal residents. It feeds on berries, nuts, roots, and seeds.
