Smooth Stingray

Scientific Name: Dasyatis brevicaudata

Description: This is the largest stingray in Australia and grows to over 4 metres in length and 2 metres in width. It can often be seen around the reefs and sand flats in the Marine Sanctuary, local jetties, and the lower estuary.

Smooth Stingrays feed on bottom-dwelling fishes, crustaceans and bivalve molluscs, which are often dug up from the sediment using suction created by the large disc leaving distinctive depressions in the sand.

These rays are not aggressive but can be curious and their large venomous spine mean they should be treated with respect and caution.
