Little Wattlebird

Species Name: Anthochaera chrysoptera

Description: The raucous call of the Little Wattlebird attracts attention, but the best way to identify this species is by the dark plumage, with white streaks, which covers the whole bird. When it flies, the wings show distinctive flashes of orange, brown.

The Coastal Banksias planted around Barwon Heads are the favoured trees of the Little Wattlebird, but they will visit other trees or plants when they are flowering. They make a variety of calls, ranging from soft and loud, usually accompanied by head and tail movements. They feed mainly on nectar, mainly banksias and eucalypts. Also berries, manna and invertebrates, especially insects and their products such as honeydew.
