The Pacific Gull is about twice the size of a Silver Gull and has a dark back and wings, with a black stripe across the tail. They have a massive yellow bill, tipped with red. Juveniles and immatures are brownish coloured birds, finally attaining the complete black and white plumage of the adults after 4 to 5 years.
They usually avoid human habitation and prefer rocky coasts and sandy beaches. They forage between high-water and shallow, often dropping molluscs from height to smash them open on rocks so they can feed on the soft animal inside. The main diet is scavenged dead fish or marine animals. |
