Mid to lower intertidal areas of rocky shores. Also subtidal
Encrusting Coralline Algae are very obvious as pink splashes over rock surfaces, on shells, and even on larger algae.

They are particularly common on the edges of rockpools, under ledges, and in deeper water where light is limited and are an important food source for juvenile snails including abalone.
