The Barwon River estuary is an extensive wetland ecosystem. The estuary is amongst the most intact, diverse saltmarsh and estuary vegetation in south-eastern Australia. The estuary is a designated Ramsar site, and the lower reaches provide important habitat, for migratory water birds escaping the harsh Siberian winter.
